HOW THE TITANIC HEROES WENT DOWN

BAND PLAYS “NEARER MY GOD TO THEE”

The ship’s band, comprising Bandmaster Hartley and seven others, played ragtime and popular operatic airs for a long time to allay panic and sailors sang sea-songs as they helped people into the boats.  It was only at the last that they changed to “Nearer my God to Thee” when they saw that the vessel was going down.  Although some discredit this story, several passengers have stated that they distinctly heard the hymn being played.
