TERRIBLE ACCIDENT AT PENLEE QUARRIES

TWO MEN KILLED

At the Penlee quarry this (Tuesday) morning, two men met with a terrible accident, to the injuries of which they succumbed.

It appears that about 11 o’clock this morning, while work was in progress at the Penlee quarry, a huge boulder, weighing several tons, dislodged itself from the face of the upper section of the quarry, and fell on two men who were working in the vicinity.

The two unfortunate men, William Charles Sleeman, of Newlyn, and Ernest Whittaker (the latter having been sent by the Labour Exchange), upon whom the boulder fell were terribly mangled.

In the case of Ernest Whittaker death was instantaneous, but not so with Sleeman, who lingered until the doctor arrived.

Immediately after the accident Dr. R. C. Lawry was summoned and promptly arrived, but no human aid could save either of the poor fellows.

P.C.’s Chapman and Botheras were also sent for, and the mangled remains were removed to the offices of the quarry, where they now await the inquest.

The quarry was closed for the day.

Sleeman, who is a Newlyn man, was greatly respected by his fellow workers, and had only been married little more than a year.  He leaves a wife and one child.

Great sympathy is extended to the unfortunate men’s relatives in their sad bereavements. may 1912

Sleeman chart1

The names in the charts come mainly from Mousehole, Paul, and Newlyn.
There are family links in the charts, showing some names that may have emigrated. I will add more names as they are identified. Some are connected to the main charts, but I have separated them out for easier understanding.
